In 2013, Governor Quinn (Illinois) signed Senate Bill 2157 into law. The idea for this law came out of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting for Adam and Krista’s son, Tyler, during his sophomore year. Under the former provision in the school code, students who played on a varsity team, participated in marching band, or joined ROTC could get a PE waiver in order to take another academic class. The law did not apply to students with disabilities who played on adaptive sports teams outside of the school. Because the school didn’t offer adaptive sports, Tyler and Adam took the cause to State Senator Bill Cunningham and State Representative Emily McAsey. Building a coalition of supportive organizations, like Equip for Equality, Dreams for Kids, and Special Recreation Associations throughout the Chicago area, Senate Bill 2157 was passed unanimously in both the Illinois House and Senate, and signed into law on July 29, 2013.
